Kenyan-based electric mobility pioneer, Roam, has just made its mark on the 2024 Impact/100 list – a global ranking of the most innovative and world-changing startups. Curated by the Norrsken Foundation, in collaboration with 40+ powerhouse venture capitalists (VCs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including the Obama Foundation and the World Fund, the Impact/100 celebrates companies that are disrupting industries and reshaping the future for the better. Roam's inclusion on this list sets a bold marker for Africa's role in driving global sustainability in transport.
Selected from over 1,200 competitors, Roam emerged as a top 100 startup tackling global challenges by providing clean, affordable transport across Africa and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This recognition coincides with the recently concluded 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), themed "Leaving no one behind."
Roam supports key SDGs, reducing carbon emissions (Goal 13: Climate Action), promoting sustainable, accessible transport (Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities), and creating economic growth and jobs (Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth).
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Roam’s logo will light up NASDAQ’s iconic Times Square sign in New York City - U.S.A., alongside fellow Impact/100 honorees such as AirForestry, Rology, Shara, Smartex, and Fleet Zero among others. NASDAQ is one of the biggest billboards in the world, with 10,000 square feet in size and a height of 120 feet. This global spotlight underscores Roam’s growing role as a leader in Africa’s electric mobility space and marks the company's acceleration towards transforming transportation at scale.
Roam CEO Filip Lovstrom remarked, “This recognition is more than just an accolade – it’s fuel for our mission to change how Africa moves. We’re committed to pushing boundaries, by making electric mobility a reality, and transforming everyday journeys into a statement for sustainability.”
The Impact/100 is not just a list – it’s a platform for 100 bold ideas to fix the future. Curated with input from partners such as Breakthrough Energy, MIT/The Engine, Atomico, Khosla Ventures, and the UNDP, the list shines a light on ventures with the potential to impact 1 billion lives. These are not your average startups – they are businesses built with impact woven into their DNA, using breakthrough technology to create meaningful change.
