In a bold step towards electrifying Africa, Roam has unveiled its latest Roam Hub on Kayole Spine Road. This cutting-edge facility is set to change the way boda boda riders operate, offering a remarkable charging capacity of 375 Kilowatt Hours (kWh), with a capacity to serve 150 boda boda riders in a day. The Roam Hub - Kayole stands as the region's premier public charging station supporting both electric buses and motorcycles, marking a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable transportation.
The Kayole hub is the fifth addition to the growing network of Roam Hubs in Nairobi. Roam is committed to increasing the number of charging stations across the city's major roads, making electric vehicle charging more accessible and convenient for all Roam Air boda boda riders.
Imagine this: For just 100 Ksh, a rider can fully charge a Roam Air battery anywhere with power, albeit in 3 hours and 45 minutes—a considerable downtime for boda boda riders. Enter Roam Hubs, designed to eliminate this waiting period. Riders can rent fully charged batteries at any Roam Hub in exchange for their depleted batteries in just a minute. This innovation not only saves valuable time but also ensures that riders can stay on the move, enhancing their productivity and earnings.
Since its inception, Roam has powered over 80 megawatts for Roam Air Riders, facilitating more than 2.2 million kilometers of travel. This monumental effort has led to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, offsetting approximately 111 tonnes of CO2 that traditional motorcycles would have emitted. “We are making a tangible impact on the environment and promoting a cleaner, greener future,” said Habib Lukaya, Product Manager - Energy and Charging at Roam.
The financial advantages for Roam Air boda boda riders are just as compelling. For a mere 150 Ksh, riders can rent a fully charged battery from any Roam Hub, enabling them to earn between 800-2,000 Ksh per rental. “This cost-effective solution not only reduces operational costs but also increases profitability for riders, proving that going electric is both eco-friendly and financially rewarding,” Habib added.
“At Roam, we are dedicated to driving the transition to electric vehicles across Africa. Our new hub on Kayole Spine Road with the capability to support both electric bus and electric motorcycle charging is a game-changer. As we continue to expand our network of Roam Hubs, we invite you to join us in our mission to electrify Africa, one vehicle at a time,” said Dionne Getata during the launch.
