Roam Expands Regional Electric Mobility Footprint with 1,600 km Nairobi–Addis Ride to Africa E-Mobility Week
Nairobi Kenya, 13 October 2025
Roam’s flagship motorcycle, the Roam Air, completes a 1,600 km electric ride from Nairobi, Kenya, to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for Africa E-Mobility Week.
Roam Air proved its endurance and efficiency, powered by portable charging and grid support from Kenya Power, Ethiopia Electric Utility, and other key e-mobility industry players.
The expedition engaged communities along the route, educating riders and schools about the benefits and possibilities of electric mobility.
Roam’s flagship electric motorcycle, the Roam Air, has completed a 1,600 km journey from Nairobi to Addis Ababa, marking the company’s third major expedition and its first-ever cross-border electric ride between Kenya and Ethiopia. Named 'The Road to Addis,' the six-day journey received a warm reception across towns and cities, as the rider stopped to engage with communities, students, and local leaders in conversations about the future of clean transportation. From Moyale to Ziway, residents gathered to witness Africa’s homegrown electric motorcycle in action, with many experiencing its silent power and zero emissions for the first time.
Throughout the journey, the team demonstrated how the 160 km dual-battery range of Roam Air and the ability to charge from any standard outlet can enable travel long distances even in areas without formal charging infrastructure. Supported by Kenya Power, Munja Energy, and the Ethiopian Electric Utility, the team was able to charge using locally available grid connections, proving that the backbone for e-mobility already exists across the region.
The expedition also became a platform for awareness. The rider conducted spontaneous learning sessions on how electric motorcycles work, how to charge them, and how much riders can save compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes. Local mechanics, students, and riders were introduced to battery-charging concepts and the economic benefits of going electric.
Arriving in Addis Ababa ahead of Africa E-Mobility Week (October 15–16), the team was received by Ethiopian electric mobility advocates and government representatives. The arrival serves as a powerful statement that Africa’s electric transition is already underway, driven by local innovation, collaboration, and purpose. The journey was captured in partnership with Intro. Africa, whose upcoming docuseries will showcase the people, places, and purpose behind this groundbreaking ride.
In January this year, the Roam Air covered a 900 km Border-to-Beach ride across Kenya and a 6,000 km solar-powered journey from Nairobi to Stellenbosch, South Africa, in October 2024. Together, these journeys continue to demonstrate the durability, range, and readiness of electric motorcycles built in Africa for African roads.
Habib Lukaya, Roam Country Manager, said: “We wanted to make our arrival at Africa E-Mobility Week both symbolic and practical; by traveling there using zero-emission, zero-noise transport. This ride proved that African innovation is not waiting for the future; it’s already happening on our roads. The Roam Air has once again shown it can handle the heat, dust, and distance of our continent, powered purely by clean energy.”
Michael Githuka, the Roam Air rider, said: “Each kilometer told a story. From curiosity in small towns to excitement in big cities, we witnessed people discovering that electric mobility is not just possible; it’s powerful, quiet, and proudly made in Kenya.”
